Leyden, 1 October 2010 - Detlef Müller-Wiesner, Chief Operating Officer Innovation at EADS, has been elected president of the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences (ICAS). The International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences provides a forum for discussing common problems in aeronautical science and technology. Its membership, open to all countries, now comprises the national associations dedicated to the advancement of aeronautics from thirty countries. It is considered the leading international forum for exchange between scientists and engineers working in aeronautics.

Müller-Wiesner was elected to the ICAS presidency during the organisation’s 2010 annual congress – held last week in Nice, France – and will serve a twoyear term.

“As ICAS president, one of my goals is to involve even more young students in the exchange of technical information and establishing common understanding in the field of aeronautical sciences,” Müller-Wiesner said. “This will include further expanding the reach of a global students’ competition that is managed by ICAS.”

Müller-Wiesner studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University Clausthal from 1982 to 1985 and graduated with a Ph D in engineering. In 1986 he joined MBB ERNO Raumfahrttechnik GmbH in Bremen, a predecessor company of EADS. He is also president of DGLR – Deutsche Gesellschaft für Luft und Raumfahrt, the German aerospace research organisation.

EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. In 2009, the Group – comprising Airbus, Astrium, Cassidian and Eurocopter – generated revenues of € 42.8 billion and employed a workforce of more than 119,000.
